Dam Structure

Project Overview

This concrete gravity dam project involved structural analysis and stability assessment for a medium-scale water impoundment structure. The dam stands 35 meters in height with a crest length of 180 meters, designed for irrigation supply, flood control, and small-scale hydroelectric power generation.

The project scope included comprehensive geotechnical investigation, foundation assessment, stress analysis of the concrete structure, and evaluation of overflow sections under various load conditions. The dam was designed to withstand extreme hydrological events including the Probable Maximum Flood (PMF) scenario.

My Role

As a Junior Engineer, I participated in the analytical and assessment phases of the dam project under senior engineering supervision. My contributions included:

  • Assisting in gravity dam stability analysis using analytical methods and software tools
  • Conducting foundation bearing capacity assessment and settlement analysis
  • Performing stress analysis for concrete overflow sections under hydraulic loading
  • Documenting geotechnical investigation data and preparing laboratory test reports
  • Calculating hydrostatic and hydrodynamic forces for various reservoir levels
  • Preparing technical drawings and cross-sections for design documentation
  • Assisting in preparation of safety assessment reports for regulatory submission

Challenges & Solutions

Challenge 1: Complex Foundation Conditions
The dam foundation presented variable rock conditions with fault zones and weathered layers. We conducted extensive drilling and core sampling, implementing grouting recommendations to improve foundation integrity and reduce permeability in critical zones.

Challenge 2: Seismic Considerations
The project site was located in a moderate seismic zone, requiring earthquake-resistant design. I assisted in pseudo-static seismic analysis and helped evaluate the dam's response to design basis earthquake loading, contributing to recommendations for structural reinforcement.

Challenge 3: Data Integration from Multiple Sources
The analysis required integrating geotechnical, hydrological, and structural data from various sources. I developed organized data management systems and verification protocols to ensure accuracy in the integrated analysis model.
